Thanks for reading! Having some basic familiarity is useful, but you don’t have to be a full linguist. I recommend some books like How We Talk by Enfield and Talk: The Science of Conversation by Stokoe. These are not about conversation design, but they give some good insights into how linguists study human conversation, and they’re very readable.
